65th edition is very lucky to welcome Peter Sagan and star-studded peloton

65th edition is very lucky to welcome Peter Sagan and star-studded peloton

Less than a month remains until the start of one of the most important sporting events in Slovakia - Tour of Slovakia will begin its 65th edition in Košice. Every year our race is evolving and making progress and we proudly present novelties, on which we were working for several years.

This year´s peloton full of stars will surely attract spectators on the track, as well as fans in front of the TV.

Their No. 1 is Peter Sagan. Three-time world champion and seven-time winner of the points classification at Tour de France will undertake Tour of Slovakia as a preparation for World Championships in Flanders.

The team also enlisted his trusty colleagues, who will join the most successful Slovakian road cyclist ever in his new team Total Energies - Maciej Bodnar and Daniel Oss, as well as his brother Juraj Sagan and Erik Baška.

The team announces its final nomination on 25 August, which is 20 days before the start, in compliance with rules of UCI.

Overall winner of 2020 edition, Jannik Steimle, is present in the preliminary start-list.

Sam Bennett, winner of the points classification at Tour de France 2020 is also listed in the preliminary start-list, but his arrival to Slovakia is dubious, since he is rumored to pause racing till the end of the season and undergo a knee surgery.  The rest of their enrollment is still uknown.

Kazakh team brings Aleksey Lutsenko, the seventh man overall at this year's Tour de France. The best Kazakh rider won Tour of Oman, took second place at Criterium du Dauphiné and seized a couple of stages at Tour de France or Vuelta d´Espana.

Very good news came from this South African World Team. Sports directors nominated their strongest riders, including current European champion Giacomo Nizzolo. The 32-year-old Italian won the Giro d'Italia points classification twice and won a stage this year, he also finished second at Ghent - Wevelgem. We can look forward to see Domenico Pozzovivo, an Italian who was a part of Top Ten at Giro d´Italia five times in his career and finished sixth overall at Tour de Suisse this year. Czech Karel Vacek and Italian Matteo Pelucchi look promising, too.

German team´s most interesting cyclist is certainly Jai Hindley, second overall at Giro d´Italia 2020. After this season, the 25-year-old native of Perth leaves his team for Bora-hansgrohe. Two years ago, he finished second overall at Tour of Pologne. Their great sprinter Cees Bol, who also won a Paris-Nice stage this year, will compete in mass sprints. Another well-known name is Casper Pedersen, who won the legendary classic Paris-Tours last year.

Australian Michael Hepburn, Danish Christopher Juul-Jensen and Italian Alexander Konyshev, son of a successful former Russian cyclist Dimitriy Konyshev, will be perhaps the most famous faces that Australian Team Bikeexchange brought to Tour of Slovakia.

Legends are coming. Even to Slovakian roads. Israel Start-Up Nation team will line up the four-time winner of Tour de France, a cyclist that has so far competed at Grand Tours nineteen times in his career and won seven of them. Slovakian fans will witness the presence of Chris Froome. He won all three Grand Tours within twelve months, Tour de France, Vuelta d´Espana and Giro d´Italia successively.

Famous and legendary cyclists will race along procontinental and continental teams. Opportunity to present the team and sponsors in the Eurosport broadcasting will be a strong motive for teams to bring their finest.

65th year of Tour of Slovakia takes place from 15th to 19th September 2021. Itinerary includes a prologue and four stages that will show cyclists the country from East to West. All starts in Košice and culminates in Trnava. Cyclists will cover a total of 692.1 kilometers over the course of five days and will fight in 12 intermediate and 15 mountain sprints.

Apart from prestige, the classification jerseys offer also financial benefits. Cyclists will fight for the most precious yellow jersey with a logo of our most important sponsor Niké and three more jerseys for the best rider in each classification:

- green with a logo our sponsor Škoda for the winner of the points classification,

- polka dot jersey with a logo of our sponsor Janom for the King of Mountains,

- white with a logo of the The Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Sport of the Slovak Republic for the best U23 rider.

Other awards are for:

- the best Slovakian cyclist,

- the most aggressive rider of the stage that will bear a red number the next day,

- the best team, which will be announced after the end of the final stage in Trnava.

We are very lucky to welcome a total of 22 teams, seven of them are WorldTour Teams, including Peter Sagan's team Bora-hansgrohe and the most successful team in the world, Deceuninck - Quick-Step.
