The best year is now over, the triumph of Alaphilippa is a proof of a great progress

The best year is now over, the triumph of Alaphilippa is a proof of a great progress

It’s over us. The 62nd Annual of The Tour of Slovakia will be written into the history of the race as the best of them all so far. For the first time we hosted World Tour teams which brought thousands of fans into our country.

Big things were happening in Slovakia for the last five days. To see with our own eyes, barely behind the corner of our houses the big cycling icons such as Julian Alaphilippe, Niki Terpstra, Matteo Pelucchi or Juraj Sagan was something unimaginable a few years ago. But nevertheless the teams, not short on stars, truly did arrive to participate in our event, their riders enjoyed Slovakia and their presence made itself visible on the ending classifications.

Elite teams directed the race

Quick-Step Floors, Bora – hansgrohe, CCC Sprandi Polkowice, Cofidis and Gazprom – Rusvelo have all shown their strengths on our roads during those five days. From the first all the way till the last stage they didn’t let anyone into the front of the peloton, except for a few exceptions, and they carefully controlled the whole event. Its clear also from the fact that all the five stage victories ended up in the hands of Quick-Step or Bora, but they didn’t get them for free.

In their mini-fight, Belgian Quick-Step was better, but very closely. Bob Jungels, Julian Alaphilippe and Fabio Jakobsen have become winners of the most prestigious stages. The Luxemobourger rider has won a specific prologue, Alaphilippe the finish on Štrbské pleso and Jakobsen, who won after the dramatic finish, has jumped on a crate in Galanta. The Germans on the other hand won in the two of the most dangerous stages. After the technically difficult ride through Dubnica nad Váhom the first one to cut the finish line was Rüdiger Selig, in Nitra it was Matteo Pelucchi.

Continental teams have appeared as well

Highly motivated continental teams have paid a visit to the 62nd Annual of our race as well, and they didn’t come to stay in the background. Two Scandinavian teams have been quick to shake things up, namely Uno-X Development Team and Riwal – Ceramicspeed, also Polish team Hurom or Czech team Elkov – Author. All of them have been relentlessly attacking. Often they were able to allow their riders to get into the full-day breakaways. One of them even, the Norwegian Uno-X Development Team, have won one valuable jersey from the race. It was given to Tobias Foss, the winner of the competition for the best young rider.

Fantastic audience

We can’t forget our fans when we evaluate the race. The fans have been giving us a lot of joy since the initial day. The St. Egídius square, where the prologue started, was filled with the crowd, and that wasn’t the only time that people showed support. Poprad was filled also on the second day. Everyone came to see the modern-day gladiators, be it kids, students, working people but also seniors. Many cycling fans have found their way to our mountains and other towns as well. On Štrbské pleso, the peloton was welcomed by a fantastic audience scenery, the same in Ružomberok, Dubnica nad Váhom, or in Nitra.

Hill Vršatec, where the road was surrounded by thousands of people, should be mentioned on its own. Never before in the history of the race there was such a large crowd of cycling fans in one place. It was there where we showed to the world that Slovakia is a cycling country and the atmosphere of that climb was enjoyed and felt by all the cyclists as well. We can’t also forget Galanta, where the race ended. During five days in total, tens of thousands of people have met by the streets. They all cheered noisily, but responsibly.

The challenging and amazing race, magical atmosphere and a flawless execution of the event were highlights of The 62nd Annual of The Tour Slovakia. We have sent a great message to the world. All the participants, the riders, teams, referees and also organizers have expressed satisfaction about the race and are looking forward to visiting our roads again next year. We hope that you, just like this year, won’t be missing as well.
