Itamar Einhorn won the last stage, Peter Sagan finished second and dominated the overall classification

The grand finale of the 65th year of Tour of Slovakia was hosted by city of Trnava. The last stage measured 159 kilometers and its second half was practically flat. Itamar Einhorn enjoyed the victory, not only he was present in break all day, but he eventually won the group sprint. Peter Sagan had kept the yellow jersey.

The fourth stage of the 65th year of Tour of Slovakia race started off in Trenčianske Teplice. On Sunday, cyclists headed towards Trnava from the vicinity of Trenčín. They went through Topoľčany and Hlohovec. The last three categorized climbs and intermediate sprints were present on the route of the last stage. On their way to Trnava, cyclists had to ascend Machnáč, Trenčianske Mitice and Hlohovec. The last kilometers were on the plain around Trnava. The yellow jersey was worn by Peter Sagan.

The conditions on the course at the beginning of the day weren’t very good, as it was cloudy and cold, but over time the conditions improved and the sun was shining by the time cyclists reached Trnava. There were constant attacks happening ever since the start of the stage. During the ascent to Machnáč, the peloton tore into three parts, Peter Sagan (Bora – hansgrohe) was in the very first group. Along with him there was also Domenico Pozzovivo (Qhubeka NextHash), who won this categorized climb.

The breakaway of the day was formed only after two hours after the race started and 26 cyclists had made it there. The riders present in the break were Jannik Steimle (Deceuninck - Quick-Step), Peter Sagan, Maciej Bodnar, Daniel Oss, Frederik Wandahl (Bora - hansgrohe), Fabio Felline, Alexey Lutsenko (Astana - Premier Tech), Casper Pedersen, Niklas Märkl, Cees Bol (DSM), Chris Froome, Itamar Einhorn, Krists Neilands (Israel Start-Up Nation), Dylan Sunderland, Andreas Stokbro, Domenico Pozzovivo (Qhubeka NextHash), Christopher Juul-Jensen, Kaden Groves, Alexander Konychev (BikeExchange), Idar Andersen (Uno-X Pro Cycling Team), Roger Adriá (Equipo Kern Pharma), Dmitriy Strakhov (Gazprom - RusVelo), Michael Kukrle, Adam Ťoupalík (Elkov - Kasper), Jakub Kaczmarek (Mazowsze Serci Poland) and Gabriele Petrelli (Cycling Team Friuli ASD).

The leading group had good four minutes ahead of the peloton in Topoľčany already. Only Deceuninck – Quick-Step worked at the head of the peloton, since Álvaro Hodeg, consecutively second man, was missing at the front. The Belgian team slowed down after a few minutes though and the leading group bounced to eight minutes ahead of them. In the end, it was the members of the break that were to fight for the stage victory. Before that, they went through three intermediate sprints, where Peter Sagan, Idar Andersen and Jannik Steimle won. Then the grand finale in Trnava followed, where Itamar Einhorn won the sprint to the finish line. Peter Sagan ended up close second, Cees Bol finished third.

The three-time world champion once again missed the stage victory by only an inch, but at the end of the race he had all the reasons to be satisfied. He won the general classification and thus after 16 years became the first Slovakian rider to win the overall classification of Tour of Slovakia. Sagan also took home a green jersey for the winner of the points competition, as well as a jersey for the best Slovak rider. Idar Andersen became the best rider under the age of 23, and thus the owner of the white jersey. Owner of the polka dot jersey has not changed. The mountain competition was won by Andrea Garosio (Bardiani CSF Faizane). He only had to reach the finish line today to confirm the victory of the jersey. At the same time, he was declared to be the most combative rider of the race.
